In honour of the last film we’re showing this season (it’s okay, we’ll be back in the fall!), here’s a list of books we’ve chosen to go alongside Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If you’re into ninja action, samurai rabbits and robot dinosaurs, you’ll find something here to feed your comic addiction.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tpb 1: Change is Constant (originally published 2011-2012)
The new incarnation of the TMNT began last year as IDW Publishing took the reigns of the long-established book. It is a revitalization of the original Kevin Eastman/Peter Laird versions of the characters; set in the same gritty world, but adding the in-depth characterization of the subsequent TV show and films. This volume retells the Turtles’ origin in a whole new way, as wildcard Raphael is set apart from his brothers by adversity, as Splinter and his disciples engage in a desperate search.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 100 Page Spectacular (originally published 1988)
Here’s one for the younger Graphic Content fans. This collection reprints the original Archie Comics adaptation of the first five episodes of the massively successful TMNT television series. Over the course of 100 pages, the Turtles encounter April O’Neil, Shredder and his Foot Clan, perennial adversaries Bebop and Rocksteady, as well as the would-be alien conqueror Krang. That’s a lot of ninja action in an affordable package!
Usagi Yojimbo Book One: The Ronin (originally published 1986-1988)
An occasional ally of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Miyamoto Usagi is the main character of one of the longest running and best received anthropomorphic animal comic series of all time. Usagi is a ronin, a masterless samurai, who wanders the Edo period of Japanese history looking for people to defend and a cause to uphold. Despite featuring a rabbit as its main character, and other animals filling the roles of every other person, Usagi Yojimbo is an exacting and expansive look at this extremely interesting period in Japanese history. Everything from food to sword maintenance is brought up in this series, which continues to gain fans young and old alike.
Super Dinosaur Volume One (originally published 2011-2012)
Another book specially chosen for our younger fans, Super Dinosaur is the story of a friendship that transcends history, size and species. Derek Dynamo is a 10-year old mechanical genius who lives with his father and a family of mechanics called the Kingstons in the Dynamo Dome. Derek’s greatest friend, however is the marvel of the age, Super Dinosaur! Augmented with robot parts, Super Dinosaur (known to his friends as SD) and Derek battle the evil Doctor Max Maximus, who wants to control the world with an army of genetically modified dinos.
All these books will be on sale at Metro Cinema before and after our screening of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on June 18th at 7:30 PM, as well as at Warp One Comics and Games all month afterwards.
